As one of my venerable industry mentors, Tim Sales, is often quoted as saying:

Business is about making people's lives better.

In today's economy, this statement takes on an entirely larger meaning. Consumers are far more judicious about how and where they spend their money to yield the greatest value.   Further, given the dramatic correction in financial and housing markets coupled with massive reductions in the work force, many hard-working individuals across the educational and professional spectrum have found themselves facing financial challenges which will require new types of thinking and action to remediate old patterns and financial woes.

As a professional networker and business mentor, I offer individuals a potential solution to these challenges by running their own businesses. Whether one has been downsized from Corporate America, is looking for extra income to make the mortgage payment, or perhaps is seeking a career transition into something more empowering and liberating than a standard job, starting a home-based business has many advantages. The compensation earned is limited only by one's production--not a glass ceiling of upper-middle management, job title, degree, or political connections.

Despite the low startup and overhead costs, however, running a small business is NOT for everyone. Quite the contrary is true. Many people are not geared toward being entrepreneurs, even if only in a part-time fashion. Running a business successfully requires a greater level of self-discipline, self-education, and persistence to succeed rather than simply completing tasks assigned by a boss or meeting the functional description of an employee. Frankly stated, this is not a place for whiners or for those who need excessive hand-holding or micromanagement. As an entrepreneur, there are no performance reviews issued, only income earned by providing excellent value to customers and associates. As a mentor I provide accountability and individualized coaching, but ultimately the responsibility to achieve and execute a time-tested system belongs to the individual. In our business model, startup and overhead costs are minimal, while the lifelong personal mentorship is essentially free.

I came into this industry with absolutely no prior education or experience in networking, communication, sales, promotion, or any other skills involved with running a business.   I have a Master's degree in electrical engineering and spent 7 years working as a design engineer for a large corporation. After being disillusioned by receiving an ever increasing workload with diminishing financial returns, I began sensing a loss of control over my professional destiny. I always had the feeling that I was underutilized, having other talents outside of my technical training which were largely unexpressed, uncultivated, and unrecognized.   I also felt far underpaid for the hours I worked, as I am sure most salaried employees do (at least those who work more than 40 hours per week but are only paid for 40 hours' time).

I left my former occupation voluntarily and opened myself to learning how I could be a professional who is compensated by doing work on my own terms which is far more personally fulfilling. I made the decision not only to be happy in my work but also to learn what was necessary to become wealthy and not just "get by."
